Urdu Qaida · Privacy policy
App: Urdu Qaida (package com.oyekamal.urdureader) · Developer: Muhammad Kamal, Pakistan · Effective 24 September 2026 (contact, donation and audio wording updated; backup and storage wording updated 3 October 2026)
The short version
Urdu Qaida works completely offline. It has no account, no login, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. Everything a learner does stays on the phone it was done on. We never see it.
What the app stores, and where
| Data | Why | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Learner name, chosen colour, track (child / adult / heritage), grade | To show progress per learner on a shared phone | On the device only (browser storage inside the app) |
| Lesson progress, quiz scores, review cards, reading speed, drill attempts | To pick the next lesson and show the progress screen | On the device only |
| Teacher name and PIN, class roster, reading assessments | Teacher mode: roster, lesson scripts, EGRA-style assessment | On the device only. The PIN is stored on the device and is not a password to any online service. |
| Settings (script, text size, vowel marks, audio-first mode) | Accessibility and display preferences | On the device only |
A name is the only piece of personal information the app asks for, and it can be anything, including a nickname or a single letter. It never leaves the device unless you export it yourself.
What the app does not do
- No internet connection is needed or used for learning. Lessons, sounds, fonts and the practice PDFs are all inside the app. The app does not send or fetch anything over the network, and a security policy built into the app (a Content-Security-Policy that only allows the app's own files) blocks it from contacting any other address. The optional links below open in your own email app.
- No advertising, no advertising ID, no analytics, no crash reporting, no third-party SDKs that collect data.
- No microphone, camera, location or contacts. The app reads a file from your phone only when you choose a backup to restore, and writes a backup or practice sheet to its own temporary cache only when you export or share one. Reading-aloud drills are timed by tapping; nothing is recorded.
- No accounts and no in-app purchases.
Sharing you start yourself
Two features send data out, and only when you tap them:
- Export backup / Share report creates a file or text on your phone and hands it to the Android share sheet. Where it goes (WhatsApp, email, Drive) is your choice, under that app's privacy policy. A backup holds learner names and progress; it never contains the teacher PIN.
- Restore from a backup (on the first screen and in Me / More, behind the grown-ups gate when data already exists) reads a backup file you choose. The app checks the whole file first and rejects anything damaged, oversized or not made by Urdu Qaida; a backup never contains or restores the teacher PIN, and a file adds or updates learner records but never changes settings that protect the device, and if it would replace records already on the phone the app asks first. On a brand-new phone the app picks personal or family mode after a restore.
- Help make this better (More tab) has an Email Kamal button that opens your email app addressed to oyekamalkhan@gmail.com, and a button that copies the address. Both sit behind a grown-ups-only gate (a spelled-out number you type as digits). Nothing is sent until you write and send a message yourself.
- Support Urdu Qaida (More tab, behind the same grown-ups gate) shows the developer's bank account details (bank, account title, account number, IBAN, branch) and can copy them. Support is entirely optional, is a person-to-person bank transfer made outside the app through your own bank under its terms, and unlocks nothing. The app has no in-app payments and never sees whether you gave.
Storage and backups
Learner data lives only in the app's private storage on the phone. Android's automatic cloud backup and device-to-device transfer are switched off for this app, so names and progress are not copied to Google's servers or to a new phone automatically. To move to a new phone, use Export backup on the old one and Restore from a backup on the new one. Deleting the app, or Reset this profile's progress, removes the data.
Children
The app is made for children from about age 5 learning to read Urdu, together with the adults who teach them. Because no data is collected or transmitted, no personal information about a child is ever received by the developer or anyone else. Deleting the app removes everything. Reset this profile's progress in More removes that learner's progress, review cards, attempts and sticker list (the learner's name stays), and Delete in teacher mode removes the learner and all of their records.
Audio
Letter, word and sentence sounds are pre-recorded files shipped inside the app. The voices are AI-generated. They were made before the app was built and are stored inside it. Nothing you type, say or do in the app is sent anywhere, and no speech is generated online.
Changes and contact
